These were the 2nd entry by Rolls Royce into the diesel loco market, the first being a 34 ton 4 wheel version. The initial loco used a petrol auxilliary engine to start the 70 HP diesel engine. 300 of these were built, and could be seen in many guises/liveries up and down the UK. The rear section was the fuel tank. Several have been preserved, the East Somerset, West Somerset and Rutland Railway Museum. In 1964 Sentinel name was changed to Rolls Royce.
