The Barry Port was a latecomer to the Welsh Coal distribution operation, shipping high quality coal from its many pits in S Wales to the rest of UK and Europe. This was the time of expansion of the Victorian era, around the late 1880's. The Barry Railway could not construct its own locos, and so shopped them out to Sharp Stewart, and SA Franco-Belge. A large maintenance works was built at Barry, now a seaside holiday resort. The class B1 was comprised of 42 engines, later transferred to GWR and were later scrapped around 1960. A similar story for the Barry J Class. The Barry B1 and J tank locos are available in Barry Railway brown or GWR green, in any combination. |
