NSWGR D58 4-8-2 Loco
The D-58 class was designed and manufactured in the mid 50's as an improved version of the earlier D-57 class, featuring 3 cylinders but using rack-and-pinion valve timing instead of Gresley conjugating valve gear. 25 units were planned however only 13 were assembled due to diesels being introduced. All were withdrawn by 1957 and none were preserved. Many D-57 and D-58 class tenders were retained as water tankers. One such tender is now preserved by the DSR&M at Dorrigo, and 5808's tender tank is grounded at Canberra station as a diesel fuel bunker. Surviving D-58 components include an example of the large castings for the 3-cylinder front-end, which are stored within the workshop area at the NSWRTM Thirlmere.
